In this recipe
There isn’t much in this recipe. Just some asparagus olive oil and a few seasonings. Most of them you will already have in your pantry making this a great weeknight dish.
Asparagus: the star of the show. You will want to get nice thick stalks of asparagus and not the thin ones as they will burn too quickly.
Olive oil: helps to keep the asparagus from sticking the grill grates
Thyme: my herb of choice however you can customize this with basil, oregano, rosemary or herbs that are complementary to your main dish.

Preparing the asparagus
As mentioned above you will want to make sure you get thicker asparagus spears. This will help keep them from burning too quickly as well as hold up to the heat. After that you want to make sure that you remove the woody ends. The easiest way to do this is to grab about 2/3 of the way down the stalk from the top and the woody end and bend until the snap. This will be a natural break and then you can trim the ends with a knife if desired.

Heating the grill
When making grilled asparagus you will put them directly over the heat so you will want to make sure that your grill is between 350-400F or 177-200C. If it gets hotter than that the asparagus may start to catch and burn before it is cooked internally. Once the grill is ready then all you need to do is toss them on the grill.

Making grilled asparagus
You will want to use your tongs to place the asparagus perpendicular to the direction of the grill grates. Rotate all of them about halfway through cooking to get those nice char marks evenly over the asparagus. If you see the flowering part of the asparagus burning too much but they haven’t been on the grill long enough, then flip the tips to the area that has indirect heat. Squeeze lemon juice after they are ready for a nice bite to the side. Â
