A lobster roll is a classic Northeastern dish that is so easy to make that tastes amazing. This has always been one of my favorite ways to treat myself when something good happens. They are perfect for picnic dates or when you want to do something special and nice. Plus, it gives you a really good reason to get yourself some fries, tater tots, or chips to eat along with it.

This is a very simple and straight-forward recipe that takes very little effort and has very little to clean up.

Lobster: you can use lobster from the tails, claws or both. For the recipe you can use 3-4 lobster tails.

Mayonnaise: this is the binding that holds all of the ingredients together. There isn’t a heavy amount so you can taste the rest of the ingredients as well.

Capers: add a briny flavor to the lobster rolls.

Split top buns: these are the normal buns used for this recipe, however if you cannot find any then a brioche bun will work.

Warm vs Cold Lobster Rolls

Depending on where you are in the Northeast you will run into different way lobster rolls. Some are made with warm lobster dunked in butter and tucked into a toasted bun. Others are served cold tossed in a light mayonnaise dressing then tucked into a toasted bun. This recipe is served cold. However, if you want it warm then you can heat the lobster in a tablespoon of butter and then toss it into the mayonnaise mixture.

Packing the lobster rolls for a picnic

When I am in the mood for a picnic this is one of the first recipes I think about. They are easy to pack and with a good ice pack travel well. One of the ways to help prevent the bun from getting soggy is to put a lettuce leaf in the bun before you tack the filling in. This will create a nice barrier to the filling and still taste great.
