Gingerbread Spice Blend

Quick and easy this gingerbread spice blend is packed with all of the holiday flavors. It is the perfect addition to your holiday baking and beverages.

Every time the holidays come around it gives me an excuse to bring out my baking spice blends. This is one of my favorites because this blend can go into so many different things. Use this to flavor any of your gingerbread recipes by swapping out the total amount of spices in the recipe with an equal amount of this spice blend.

In this recipe

This is a blend of warming spices that is normally found in every pantry. It is easy to throw together all you need is a jar.

Cinnamon: this is the main spice in this blend and does a great job bringing the rest together.

Nutmeg: this brings nutty and earthy flavors to the blend which are perfect for pumpkin.

Allspice: it is a little bitter with earthy undertones as well. It is called allspice since it tastes similar to a combination of cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

There's a lot of pepper in there

The secret to this blend is the ground black pepper. There is quite a bit in the blend for it to be used for baked treats. This adds a heat to the recipe which compliments the heat in the warming spices. However there is another reason to add pepper to sweet baked goods and that is because it is a mild irritant. This will cause your tongue to actually taste other flavors better. This will enhance the already special flavors of the cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove and allspice.

Warming spices for the win

Since they are like a hug in food form these are the stars of the blend. One of the things that I have done when I am about to bake with this blend is to toast it in a pan first. I have found that by toasting spices before adding them to my baking really helps bring out the flavors as the heat helps release the oils within the spices that contain the flavor so they have a chance to spread throughout the batter before baking.
